COMMUNITY GAMES HISTORY IS MADE
written by Martin O’Keefe
14 Goals and 17 points for, and 3 points against. This reads like a cricket score, but behind this scoreline lies a little bit of history that was made for Tipperary Ladies’ Football that probably will not appear on the sporting pages of many of our local papers.
History was made last Saturday at na Gael GAA Grounds, Tralee, when the Cahir Ladies’ Under 12 Football team, representing County Tipperary, beat all before them in Munster to qualify for the National Semi-Finals and the right to represent their Province in the Community Games Finals in Mosney in August.
The enormity of this achievement can be gauged by the fact that they are the first Tipperary team every to win this Shield and they are the first team in Munster to wrest the Shield away from the representatives of Kerry, who have been its holders for the past seven years.
This team suffered a serious setback in June, when they were deservedly beaten by Moyle Rovers by one point in the Tipperary County Championship. It shows the character of the team that they picked themselves up after this and, together with the mercurial Emma Buckley, who was back in the ranks to solidify the defense, they exceeded their own expectations with their performances in Tralee.
Credit must go to their coaches, Karl McCarthy, Mairead McIniry and Jane O’Gorman, for the preparation put into the team.
The scorelines were: Semi-Final – Tipp 7 6 Clare 0 1; Final - Tipp 7 11 Kerry 0 2. All eighteen members of the panel are to be congratulated, as this was a wholly committed team effort. The strength down the middle, with the solid Emma Corcoran at full back; the aforementioned rock Emma Buckley at centre back; the strong Aisling Armitage and majestic Aisling McCarthy at midfield. Aisling must have covered every blade of grass in the na Gael pitch.
We then go to the giften Kirsty Downey, with the magic left foot, at centre forward and the genius that is nine-year-old Aisling Moloney at full forward. Another star performer on the day was the diminutive Roisin Howard, who tormented all opposition backs. Add to these Carol Casey and Emma McIniry, part of the rock solid half back line and where would we be without mentioning our rock in the right corner, Caoimhe Hickey (who once again displayed her passion for soloing).
There is also our solid goalkeeper Emma Corcoran, who took time out in the latter stages of the Semi-Final to head upfield and score a goal of her own. We then had the willing workhorses Roisin Costigan, Aoibhinn O’Neill, Eadaoin O’Gorman, Aoife O’Brien and supersub Niamh Keating. Well done girls, you are a credit to your Ares and Club, and your County is proud of you all. I am looking forward in anticipation to Mosney 2007.
An interested observer at the Final was sports commentator Pat Spillane, who commented favourably on the excellent standard of the Cahir team and indeed he had no problem posing for a photograph with Kirsty and Aisling.

UNDER 16 BASKETBALL
Our girls put up an exceptional performance against all the odds before eventually being beaten by their bogey team Castleisland in the first round. The panel was decimated by holidays and a withdrawalk so the girls could only pick from six and great credit is due to them for being within 8 points of the opposition with ten minutes to go, before they eventually wilted with tiredness.
I want to thank all the girls for their commitment against the odds and to their willing trainers Caroline O’Donnell for all her help.
CAHIR PARK LADIES’ SOCCER
Tipperary League Division I (June) at Davis Park, Convent Road, Cahir. Park 0 Borris-St Kevnis 4. League leppers Borris were too experienced for the Park. Player of the match was Louise Carroll.
At Davis Park, July 1st, Cahir Park 2, Clerihan 1. A brilliant vkictory for a back-to-form Park team. Cahir led 2-0 at the Interval. The Goal Scorers were Alison Lonergan, Jennifer Grant. A second half rally by Clerihan produced one goal mid-way through the half. Cahir’s defense was excellent throughout, well martialled by Player of the Match Julie McMahon.
Cahir Park traveled to Borris for a League game on Wednesday 11th July. On arrival at the venue for a 7:30 kick-off, the team prepared for the game with pre-match routines. At 8pm the appointed referee failed to arrive, with both teams ready for action. A disappointed Cahir Park squad and supporters had an expensive and wasted journey on a wet and windy evening. More details later.
