CAHIR NOTES

FUNDAY NEXT SUNDAY
The Funday has come upon me very fast, but everyone I have spoken to seems very positive in their interest and helpfulness.  This year, the day is in aid of Special Olympics Ireland, so there will be a small charge in at the gate – just €3 for adults and free in for children.

So, what we have in store is:  the Fun Dog Show (of course) with cups for first in each of the five pedigree classes, rosettes to fourth in all classes, and the lovely Perpetual Cup for Best Pedigree in Show.  Thereafter there are fun classes for all-comers, be they an unrecognisable mixture (like one of mine) or a Crufts winner, they stand an equal chance.  Entries will be taken from 1:30pm and Judging will start at 2pm.

The Scouts are providing tea, coffee and games, and I have no doubt one of these will involve a wet sponge! They are always a huge asset, being so well organised and such fun to have around.

Bridget, the Manager at the Duneske Leisure Centre, has very kindly agreed to organise a Teddy Bears’ Picnic from 2 to 3pm, in the Inch Field with all the other goings on.  All children are welcome, as long as they are accompanied by a Teddy Bear, and they will have games and treats galore, and plenty of time afterwards to enjoy the rest of the fun.

Marie Shine herself, who started the ball rolling, will have a Bottle Stall and hopes to make loads of money.

The Cahills are very kindly bringing their ponies, and the Fun Day wouldn’t be the same without them.  There will also be some surprises, so come along and enjoy the stalls, games and sports (wellie throwing; races; etc) as well as the great community feeling that is always generated.  And if it is still raining, at least we can protect ourselves under the lovely trees.

PRIDE OF PLACE
Last week there were Judges in Cahir for the Island-wide competition to find the town and its community that have achieved the most.  Northern Ireland and the Republic are both involved. The competition is run by Cooperation Ireland in conjunction with Local Authorities, and the towns entered have to be nominated by their Local Authorities.  There are 108 entries in four or five different population categories.  The Regional Finals will be held in September, and the All Irelands in November.

The Judges were shown all the projects with which Cahir Development has been involved, ending up in Duneske Leisure Centre after a tour of the Childcare Centre.  So here’s hoping!

DEPUTY’S WEEKLY CLINIC IN CAHIR
I was interested to hear that Mattie McGrath TD will be holding a Clinic every Wednesday in the Enterprise Centre, from 10am to 5pm.  Personal appointments can be made by arrangement with Mattie, by contacting 052 29155 or 086 818 4307.

BINGO ON THE MOVE
Starting this week, Bingo will have moved to the Community Hall.  It will still start at 8:30pm, the prizes are the same and there will be raffles on the first Tuesday – just a different venue.

The Bingo Committee hope this means that they can donate more to the community:  they recently presented Lil Davis with a cheque for the Day Care Centre and before that once went to the Hospice.

The best of luck on the move, and the atmosphere has been so great, I am sure there will be no change now.

WHAT’S ON AT DUNESKE
Bridget and all the staff at Duneske thank so much all those who supported their Festival Weekend. The rain was no match for the people who turned out and made it a great weekend in which to be involved.

The Multi-Activity Camp starts this week, for boys and girls from 5 to 12 years old.  This will run until Friday, from  11am to 2pm.

Dance Madness is back again with Sarah, on Saturday 28th fr5om 12 to 4om.  Learn the moved that Beyonce, Shakira and Britney can do.  Register now! Ages 5 to 14 years welcome, girls and boys. €7 per child and refreshments will be provided.

Volleyball is definitely starting next week, so come along on Thursday nights to learn how to play the game. For those who can already p0lay, set nights will be designated, so get your name in to them now, so you can get started.

Just a note for all parents whose children use the playground.  It is so important that children are supervised by adults at all times. With the summer holidays, the playground has got considerably busier and children cannot be allowed to wanter around unsupervised.

For details on all the above contact 052 455617.

Congratulations Karen & Richard on your wedding day

Karen Haide and Richard Caplice make their vows during their wedding last Saturday in St Kieran's. Ballylooby.  Fr Pat Butler officiated. Also in the picture is Richard's Best Man (and brother) Paul.  The lovely Reception was held at the Kilcoran Lodge Hotel.

NEW CHEF AT THE BELL
Michael Read, who until recently was the Head Chef at The River House, has been snapped up by The Bell and, starting this Wednesday, will be preparing Dinners from 5:30 to 9pm.  From this Thursday there will be Lunches too, plus a Snack Menu available all day.

Michael sets very high standards, and uses as much local produce as possible – so go along and I know you will enjoy! Glad you are staying in Cahir, Michael.

CAHIR ACTIVE RETIREMENT
The monthly meeting of the Association will be held on Wednesday 1st August in the Catherine McAuley Room at 2:30pm.

Plans for the Autumn break will be discussed, plus further activities. The meeting will be followed by light refreshments and music.  All are cordially invited and will receive a warm welcome – and I can vouch for that.

KNOCKGRAFFON ART GROUP
This Group’s 2007 Exhibition will be held at Cahir House Hotel on Sunday 5th August from 10am onwards.  Members of the Group will be present to discuss the work, some of which are scenes of beauty spots in Tipperary, and all the work is for sale.

The Group comprises enthusiastic and talented local people who have worked hard to produce this show, to go along and see them whilst enjoying your holiday Sunday in Cahir.

CHILDREN’S CRAFT CLASS
The children’s craft classes at the Craft Granary have been very popular, so an additional class will be run this Thursday, 26th July.  The class will run from 10:30am until noon, at a cost of €7.50 per child.  It is open to children from 4 to 10 years and booking is essential, as places are limited. Please telephone 052 43873 to book.

CAHIR AREA DEFIBRILLATOR GROUP
This Group has commissioned defibrillator display boards, to highlight the location of the lifesaving sets.  These will be in place in the next few weeks.  The displays are on high visibility boards with the names and phone numbers of those qualified, side by side on them

BROADBAND CONTRACTORS
The contractors that are installing the piping for Broadband around the town must be congratulated for the speed and minimum of disruption.  The fact that they finish the road as they go along every evening cannot be ignored.  These contractors are setting a new standard, says Cllr Seanie Lonergan.

CUMANN GINEALOCH NA CATHRACH
Cahir Genealogical Society now provides a Genealogical Service. For information on family names / genealogy etc please send a s.a.e. to Mary T. O’Callaghan, Barrack Street, Cahir, County Tipperary.

IRISH WATER SAFETY
Just a reminder that the Irish Water Safety River Week will take place in Cahir on Monday 30th July to Saturday 4th August. Registration will take place at the Community Hall at 12 noon on the first day.  Enquiries can be made to May Stapleton on 062 52968.

DOGS IN TROUBLE
Missing from Pearse Street, Cahir is a female English Pointer.  She is nine years old, with a black face and a black & white body. She answers to the name of Jessie and was so terrified of the recent thunder that she tore through a fence and ran.  If seen please contact 086 j389 6933.

It has been brought to my attention that two little terriers, on like a Cairn and the other a brown Jack Russell type, need a loving home. Their master has died and his widow has had to go into a home. The dogs, both male, are currently being looked after by a caring neighbour who has known them for years, but they must be very unsettled.  The younger dog is about 6 and the other appears to be a few years older.  They will both have been vetted and inoculated before they are homed, and the home inspected, of course.  If anyone can look after these waifs and give them the love they need, please contact me.

CAHIR CAMOGIE NOTES
Cahir U12's win County C Championship for the first time.
There are not too many people in our world who can say that they had a hand in creating a little bit of history, but the panel of over 20 U12 girls had that privilege on Tuesday night last July 17th when team captain Emma Corcoran accepted the U12"C" County Championship shield from Tipperary Camogie County Board Chairman,Lar O' Brien. Earlier that evening we left Cahir with a barage of thunder and lightening to see us on our way along with torrential rain thrown in for good measure. Indeed not even "Martin Moloney's ducks" would have agreed to go out in the conditions but true to the commitment and interest of this panel, not one even mentioned the rain. But God must have took their courage to heart and when we arrived at The Ragg grounds the black clouds made way for white fluffy ones and the rain abated. With our opposition for this game of the year being our near neighbours New Inn, we knew we were going to be in for a though encounter. New Inn were first to the ball after the throw in but excellent work from  the mid fielders of Ashling McCarthy and Kirsty Downey ensured that the sliothar found its way up into our forward line. Diligent game play from Ashling Moloney and Aoife Corcoran kept the ball in around the square and after around the sixth minute of the game full forward Rachel Brehony side stepped the New Inn keeper for the first goal of the match. Centre back, Emma Buckley was on fire for the whole duration of the game and excellent clearances by her into our half forwards saw Ashling Moloney convert a fine point. Don't think for one minute that Cahir were having all the play, New Inn with some excellent players were working hard and were rewarded with a very well taken point.  Another fine ball from Ashling McCarthy that landed in the square saw the Cahir forwards attack in numbers and while Rachel O Dwyer and Emer Quinlan fed the ball in, a cute flick of the hurley from Rachel Brehony put Cahir's second goal on the score board.
Managers Mary, Anthony and Michael gave plenty of encouragement to the girls at half time and words of wisdom from seasoned player Mary didn't go wasted on her young charges. A section of play early in the second half from mid-fielder Ash McCarthy saw her blast home a goal from 25yards out that would have been worthy of Croke Park. The Cahir defence were on top gear all night long and a much improved Roisin Costigan along with Edel Lenihan, Clara O Donnell, Ciara Lonergan meant that full back and Captain Emma Corcoran and goalie Caral Casey had a relatively easy first half. However the second half saw the opposition take the ball to Cahir a lot more and the clearances of Emma and the quickness of goalie Caral of her mark to catch and  puck to the side, gave much relief of the Cahir supporters. Another superb passage of play saw centre forward Ashling Moloney hand pass a great ball to Roisin Howard who true to form made no mistake and left the goalie helpless as the sliothar flew past her. Roisin was again responsible for the next score with a fine point from a free expertly executed from the right-hand corner of the pitch. With the introduction of Caoimhe Hickey, Claire Kiely, Alina Neumerzahskya, Joye Arbuckle and Niamh O Brien the resulting victory was due to every member of this panel. Not just on the night but all the way throughout the campaign. The final score was Cahir 4-2 New Inn 2-1
Many congratulations to all for bringing this victory to our club for the first time and no words of praise can be wasted on Mary Howard, Anthony Corcoran and Michael Lonergan for their commitment and the amount of time they have put in over the last number of months with this team. Many thanks to all who helped make the home coming for the girls such an enjoyable occasion in the club house. The U12 Panel is as follows: Caral Casey, Clara O Donnell, Emma Corcoran, Ciara Lonergan, Edel Lenihan, Emma Buckley, Roisin Costigan, Ashling McCarthy, Kirsty Downey, Roisin Howard, Ashling Moloney, Aoife Corcoran, Rachel O Dwyer, Rachel Brehony, Emer Quinlan, Caoimhe Hickey, Claire Kiely, Joye Arbuckle,  Alina Neumerzahskya, Niamh O Brien, Keley Halpin, Sadhbh O Donnell, Emer Harris.

Catching up on past weeks:  on 4th July the numbers drawn were:  1, 14, 16 and 25.
On 11th July the numbers were 2, 8, 10 and 21.
Last week, 18th July, Tom Burke witnessed the Draw, that produced numbers 1, 9, 10 and 17, but no Jackpot Winner.

The five Lucky Dip winners, each of whom received €30, were:  Edmund Burke Jr, Jamestown, Clonmel;  Brendan English, Carryclogher; Pat & Anne Corbett, Lisakyle;  Loretta & Tom, c/o The Bell;  Peggy O’Donnell, Mountain Road.

This week, the Jackpot total is up to €1,900 and tickets can be bought up to the last minute (noon on Wednesday) from the Business & Training Centre.  All the profits from the community lotto go to the Duneske Leisure Complex.

COACHES TO CORK
Last week someone mentioned to me the need for a reliable 10am coach to Cork for those going to hospital, or keeping other appointments.  As things stand at the moment, people often have to wait as long as 1 ½ hours, which is a nonsense.

I mentioned this to Cllr Andy Moloney, and found that he has already been trying to find some way of rectifying the situation.  His most recent effort was with Aircoach, who say that they are not licensed to stop in Cahir. Wouldn’t it be handy if they tried to extend their licence?

What Andy did say was that those who have to attend hospital in Cork can contact the hospital in Clonmel and arrange to be picked up by their coach.  I remember a lot of people used to do this, waiting in Cahir House, and I am sure things haven’t changed.

MOTOR TAX ONLINE
Last Friday, the Online service whereby you can tax your vehicle, pay your rent, refuse charges, fines (?) or whatever, was made available in the Cahir Area Office at Erasmus Smith House.  There were friendly and knowledgeable staff present to guide those not used to computers through the remarkably easy steps and there will always be someone there to help if needed.

A welcoming cuppa was awaiting callers plus cakes, and sweets for the smaller members of the community.  There was a steady trickle of people who were attracted by the idea, and it will be handy for those without a computer at home.

READERS’ NEWS & VIEWS are always welcome at 10 Market Yard / 086 840 5020 and at the e-mail address above.  Please try to remember that Monday morning is my deadline, and the earlier I hear from you the better. Don‘t forget that many pictures for which there is no space here, plus much more, can be seen online on www.cahirnews.cahirda.com
