CAHIR NOTES

FUNDAY SUNDAY
The new date for this fundraiser for Special Olympics Ireland, aiding and abetting Maria Shine’s efforts, is Sunday 2nd September. I hopes it will provide fun for everyone, as well as making loads of money for the very worthy cause.

First of all, apologies to those who turned up on 29th July. They must have missed the broadcasts by local radio, and by then I was under doctor’s orders to keep the feet up for a few days, so couldn’t even go down to the Inch to talk to anyone who did arrive.  And as for the weather forecast, which was the reason for the postponement … why on earth did I pay any attention to it?

If anyone would like to organise an event for the day, please contact me at the number below.  I am not able to get in touch with everyone direct in the time, so please don’t wait, but give me a ring on 086 840 5020.

LADIES’ MINI MARATHON
Congratulations to Lena Lonergan, Rosemaree McGrath and Lena Lowry, who recently completed the Ladies’ Mini Marathon in aid of South Tipperary Hospice.

The girls raised a total of €1,577, and I hope they are suitable pleased with themselves.  The cheque was presented to Ann Grace (South Tipp Hospice) in Nellie’s Bar in Bansha recently.  I have been asked to thank everyone who sponsored them and there is a special thank-you for Nellie, for her hospitality on the night.

ALL ROADS LEAD TO …
Newcastle, this weekend.  The Newcastle Club is very pleased to announce their second Vintage Family Community Day, taking place on Sunday 12th August.

The Club is very grateful to everyone who contributed in any way to the fun-packed event last year. This year’s event is expected to surpass last year’s by upwards of 250 separate items of Vintage Cars, Tractors, Motor Cycles, Fire Brigade and other stationary pieces of equipment.  These will include a Threshing Mill, Stone Crusher, Mowing Machines, etc.  Sheep Shearing with Traditional Hand Shears as well as with a Shearing Machine powered by manpower will also take place.  All will be assembled in Hallinan’s Field, adjacent to the village.

There will also be many side shows, children’s sports, fun and games and there will be live updates of the Waterford v Limerick match from Dublin.

In conclusion, the Newcastle Vintage Club is inviting young and ole to have an enjoyable family day out, experiencing part of our heritage, with a wide-ranging vintage display blended together with modern day activities.

I know from past experience what a terrific atmosphere pervades events in Newcastle, and I am sure this will be a day to remember. Thanks to Mattie for sending me the details.

The Craft Granary is pleased to announce an exhibition by the Selska Design Group from County Wexford.

SUMMER SALE
I feel the Summer Sale put on by Meadows & Byrne is worth a mention:  lots of lovely Household Goods and if you are a Loyalty Club member, you get an extra 20% off.  Has to be worth a look!

CAHIR DEVELOPMENT COMMUNITY LOTTO
Eilish Cotter witnessed the Draw last week, which did not produce a Jackpot winner.  However, the five Lucky Dip winners each received €30:  Ann O’Donnell, Clonmore;  Tess McGloin, New Inn; ME!! (for the first time since the Lotto started); Liam & Mary Flynn, Clogheen;  Michael Nugent, c/o Castle Arms, Cahir.  The numbers to come up were 1, 6, 15 and 24.

The Jackpot  total going on to this week is €2,200 and tickets can be purchased up to the last minute (which is noon on Wednesday).  All the profits from the Community Lotto go to the Duneske Leisure Complex.

CAHIR ACTIVE RETIREMENT ASSOCIATION
Wednesday 1st August witnessed a large attendance of members for the monthly meeting.  Refreshments were provided and grateful thanks are extended to members of the group for the service they so cheerfully provide.  Local musician Stefan Grace provided the entertainment and a big thank-you must go to Stefan:  “you were great” is the concensus.

Enthusiastic praise was heaped on the organisers of the recent trip to Killaloe – it was voted an outstanding success.

On Monday 20th August the group will visit the Bru Boru Centre in Cashel for a full evening of light entertainment, preceded with a meal at a local restaurant.

The next outing will be to the West Lodge Hotel in Bantry on 23rd September.  This will be for three nights B&B and evening meals.

For answers to your queries about the above events, please telephone 052 41892;  41963;  41213 or 65306.

“ASHAMED”
The following letter was sent to me, name and address supplied, and needs no explanation.

“I feel so ashamed of our beautiful heritage town of Cahir. It is now peak season for our tourists and hundreds visit Cahir each day. When they step off the coaches or out of their cars, their first sight is of litter.

“The main car park, at the rear of the Tourist Office, is strewn with empty beer cans, plastic bottles and drinks cartons, pizza boxes and burger holders. More of the same litter greets the tourists on their walks around the Inch Field and the Mall. The bottle banks are full since Wednesday 18th July and to date [written on 24th July] have not been emptied.

“The lovely notice board showing the local fauna, flora and bird species at the entrance to the Inch field has been vandalised and smashed. Also the other board at the start of the River Walk. Last Sunday morning, give bags of rubbish were dumped at the entrance to Market Yard. And they are still there today [24.7.07].

“I would like to ask some pertinent questions.  How many summonses has the traffic /litter Warden brought to court for dropping of litter and illegal dumping of refuse?  Also, it is an offence to drink in public areas – parks, picnic areas etc.  People are drinking in the above-named areas in Cahir on a daily basis.  Why is the law not being enforced?  I have yet to see the Warden or a Garda on foot patrol in the Inch field or on the Mall.”

I know that the opinions the writer expresses are shared by many.

NEW AUTO SERVICE
There is a new business, “Auto Service” in the Carrigeen Industrial Estate, next to Gleeson Tyres, that supplies many essential services, including  free pre-NCT tests, so why not give them a ring on 087 26 36 667 or 087 95 81 908 during office hours:  9 am to 6pm on week days and 9am to 1pm on Saturdays.

COACHES TO CORK
I have now heard from Cllr Andy Moloney, who has been in touch with Aircoach again about stopping in Cahir.  He explained that Cahir is now being  by-passed again, and that parking should be easier, and in turn there would not be much of a hold-up.

He re-iterated that Cahir is the crossroads from Dublin – Cork and Waterford – Limerick, and they should look favourable on such a stop.  He suggested that every second hour would nearly do us for a start.

I look forward to hearing more in this ongoing saga.  Andy can be contacted on 086 360 9110,  on andy.moloney@southtippcoco.ie 052 62423 or at

ANOTHER DOG MISSING
A West Highland White Terrier aged 2, wearing a red lead and collar, has gone missing from Riverdale. Please telephone 087 217 9637 if you can report a sighting or have found this little girl.

CONGRATULATIONS
Good wishes to Martina and Richard Riley on the recent birth of their baby girl.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TERRY
Very best wishes, if a day late, to Terry Taylor from all her family and friends, and me.  Hope you had a great day.

READERS’ NEWS & VIEWS
I am always happy to hear from anyone who has news for me – particularly if it is good news – or who wishes to make some sort of announcement on this page. I can be contacted on 086 840 5020 / found (if in) at 10 Market Yard or e-mailed at the above address.  And the earlier the better.
