CAHIR NOTES

LADIES WHO LUNCH
I can hardly keep up with the “specials” being donated for those attending this glamorous event, but I will try to bring you up to date.  Already mentioned are the 100 pairs of designer earrings being given to the first 100 ladies (although I am not sure whether it is for the first to arrive or the first to go into lunch, or what);  Collin goodie bags for everyone;  handmade chocolates from Gallways of Waterford for everyone;  three consecutives days in one of the Curves centres for each lady present; 10% off anything purchased from Klassy Lady in Cahir, on sight of a ticket for the big day. And there could be more before 12th..

The well known Tarot Card Reader, Kay Mullally, will be present, and anyone wishing for a consultation should pre-book a time on 052 32950.  She will be available from 11am to 6pm. Kay has already donated a Free Reading as one of the Raffle prizes.  And some of the other prizes too, have to be seen to be believed, including a designer evening dress and much, much more.

All the proceeds from the Raffle and any profit made on the day all go to Children At Risk in Ireland.

So if you haven’t bought a ticket yet, don’t leave it any longer, as there are a limited number available and when that number has been reached, that’s it.  Tickets at €75 for the whole prestigious day are available from Sheehan’s of Cahir (the last name to join the line-up);  Klassy Lady of Cahir;  Interior Concepts/Shoe Heaven, Cahir;  Golden Threads, Cashel;  Opera on The Square, Fethard;  Gleeson’s Jewelry, Tipp Town; Stakelums Fashion, Thurles.  And of course also from the Dundrum House Hotel.

Just a quick reminder of the day’s programme.  On arrival at 11am there is coffee and home-made shortbread for everyone, and while relaxing with this, models will be moving amongst the ladies, showing jewelry.  After coffee, there is an opportunity to visit the stands, which are many and varied.  For lunch there is a lovely four-course menu, with no corners cut, and Gallways have donated chocolates to have with the coffee.  There will be some interesting talks during the day, which ends with the Fashion Show, and there will be wine and more chocs when leaving.

I was most impressed with the spacious rooms that Dundrum House has made available, each leading on from the next, and this will be a really entertaining sophisticated and indulgent day.  And only a week off!

FUNDAY SUNDAY
And it really was a fun day.  At one point I began to think that there would have to be another cancellation, as so many erstwhile helpers were going to the Match.  And of course those who weren’t actually there left the field in droves just before kick-off.

However, the bottom line is that €1404.00 was raised for Special Olympics Ireland and Maria Shine’s trip as a helper.

Many thanks to the extended Caplice, Caplice-Taylor family and friends, who turned up trumps, worked very hard and even enjoyed themselves.  Maria Taylor must be exhausted with all the running around she did, but I know she feels it was worth it. They organized the BBQ, selling the drinks and also selling Raffle tickets. Many thanks to Kennedy’s Butchers on the Square for the gorgeous burgers, which were much appreciated and commented upon, and to SuperValu for their lovely buns.  Everyone approached was so helpful.

Among those I must mention individually are Teri and Johnny Taylor;  Oisin and Kieran Kelly;  Tommy Buckley; Dervgela Shine; Chi Chi Caplice; Mossie Caplice and Patrick who so kind brought the Bouncy Castle.  Sadly, the generator wasn’t working, but Patrick was very nice about that and we all appreciate the fact that he was providing this popular entertainment free.  Next time, Patrick!

I am also very grateful to Claudia, whose surname I haven’t got in front of me, who very kindly sold a whole book of Raffle Tickets.  I hope she has enjoyed her first week at the Colaiste.

Which leads nicely on to those who provided the Raffle prizes, that attracted so much interest.  Jason (Irwin’s Yard) – a very welcome bottle of Vodka;  beautiful presentation packs of big-name brands from Morrison’s Chemist and Kennedy’s Chemist;  a lovely vase from the Craft Granary; a totally mad and wonderful Shoe Lamp from Interior Concepts and a Voucher for €50 from the Riverside Restaurant in Ardfinnan.  Is it any wonder the tickets sold like hot-cakes?

Aine Guerin and Stacey O’Brien took the entries for the Dog Show, and Maria Taylor helped when she had a moment.  Aine was also the very able Steward, while I did the judging.  I must mention here that there is another Dog Show next Sunday, as part of the GAA Field Day, with another Judge, which will make a nice change for everyone.  This is Alison Messenger, who has beautiful and very successful Wolfhounds.  But she is a true dog-lover and will get a lot of fun out of the less serious classes, too.

Probably the man who I relied on the most was Andy Moloney, who collected the tables from the Castle Court (many thanks, Rita) and the chairs from the GAA (ta very much, too) and then ferried me and all my bits and pieces to the field in good time to get set up before people started arriving.

There was a point when I thought the children’s races would have to be abandoned (after the start of the match!), but Andy Moloney and Mattie McGrath took this in hand and they and the kids had a great time. The Deputy also presented the owner of the Best Pedigree Dog in Show with her trophy.

Tina Looby organized the Teddy Bear’s Picnic and Painted Faces while the others were colouring pictures. There were prizes for the two best examples of colouring in, and a lot of pretty and striking faces around the field.

Maria Shine herself was in charge of the Bottle Stall and she is very grateful for all the donors of bottles, who were so generous.  There was a nice range of things to be won, and I know everyone enjoyed it.

Molly Walsh organized the Wellie Throwing again, which gave everyone some laughs (a wellie is really very difficult to throw far), while Mossie Caplice had great fun and raised a tidy little sum with the Putting Game, which was thought up and made by his late brother Frank, some years ago.

Last but by no means last were the rides in the pony and trap, if that is the right word.  It was a pleasure to see the skewbald trot out – a lovely mover.  John Cahill made a generous donation to the cause before leaving the Inch Field.

Maria Shine is also extremely grateful to Supermacs, who donated €100 and offered any help that they could provide.  This really was a very happy community day, with so many playing a part.  If I have left anyone out, it’s not on purpose.  The results of the Dog Show may or may not follow this week, but they will appear on the website (www.cahirnews.cahirda.com) and on this page at some point.  There were some stunning dogs!

I almost forgot the kind people on the “gate”:  Ernie Bates, Paddy Flynn and Seanie Lonergan, who was minding and counting the money for us.  Seanie also donated a terrific special prize to the Best in Show:  a photograph printed on canvass.  All in all, the elected representatives were invaluable.

VTOS
The marvelous Multi-Media Art Course offered by VTOS starts again in September, and I really do recommend that anyone who qualifies should have a go.  During the first year that this course was run, I took part in it and my only regret is that it was not, at that time, a two-year course.

To qualify you must be over 21 and in receipt of one of a variety of Social Welfare payments for at least `56 days in the previous 12 months.  It is well worth enquiring to see if you do qualify.

The Course offers the following:  Drawing;  Combined materials;  Community Art;  Communications;  Music;  Sculpture;  Work Experience and Print Making.  All you need to do in the first instance is contact Tina Looby, the VTOS Co-ordinator, on 087 655 9181 or 052 42960 or the Adult Education Officer, Eileen Condon, on 052 26269 / e-mail adulted@tippsouthvec.ie.

CAHIR DEVELOPMENT COMMUNITY LOTTO
The Jackpot is still going up, and stands at €2,800 for the Draw this Wednesday.  Last week the draw was witnessed by Justin Irwin and produced numbers 4, 10, 16 and 2,  The five Lucky Dip winners, each of whom received €30, were:  Liam & Mary Flynn, Carrigmore, Clogheen;  Eamon O’Donnell, Rosemount View, Cahir;  Paul Butler, Colaiste dun Iascaigh, Cahir;  Margaret Donegan, Castle Street, Cahir and Mrs M O’Donnell, Clonmore, Cahir.

All the profits from the Community Lotto go to the Duneske Leisure Complex.

GAA FIELD DAY
As mentioned above, this terrific day is taking place this coming Sunday in the GAA Field. Under 8 and under 10 games will be played, plus lots of fun for all the family, including a Dog Show, to be judged by Alison Messenger.

CAHIR CAMOGIE U 12'S/ U 16'S
The U12 League has got off to a great start for the Cahir girls, with two comprehensive wins in the last week. Their first game against Clonoulty was played in Duneske on Tuesday evening, with Edel Lenihan showing great improvement on the half back line. She had a superb game and contributed well to Cahir's fine win.

On Thursday evening we travelled to Ballycahill to play Holy Cross. Again another fine victory ensued, with Ciara Lonergan playing some great camogie in the back line. We now face Templemore in an away game on Saturday morning next. All the panel are requested to gather at Duneske at 9.30am to make our way to Templemore.

The U16 game on Saturday evening last against Knockavilla turned out to be a great encounter with exceptional play from both sides. Cahir opened the scoring with a fine point from Geraldine O Donnell, but this was to be our only score in the first half, even though Niamh Breedy was very unlucky not to rattle the back of the net.

Knockavilla had notched up a goal and a point and Cahir seemed to be feeling the pressure somewhat. Fine play from Bronagh Higgins in the half back line and Aoife Casey at centre field, together with diligent work from Cahir keeper Aoife O Gorman, meant the margin between the two teams was kept to a minimum.

Claire O Dwyer  picked up a lovely ball with her hurley  and sent in a beautiful point from around the 45m mark, opening the scoring in the second half. Moving Marie Claire McCarthy into the half forward line proved to be excellent decision and she started to dominate at her position frustrating the Knockavilla back line. With a beautiful point from Marie Claire and a goal from Jane O Donnell, Cahir looked to have the upper hand. But, as we all know, looks can be deceiving and before we had time to exhault in our lead, Knockavilla had scored another goal and a point putting them ahead once more.

Marie Claire popped over another point and corner forward Aoife Burke made no mistake when she picked the ball on the outskirts
of the square and rattled home a fine goal.  Knockavilla again responded with another point but this was answered by Marie Claire with a fine point. A side line cut was excellently directed by Ann Marie O Gorman straight into the path of Marie Claire who solo-ed in towards the goal and finished Cahir's tally for the day with a rasper of a goal. The final score line was Cahir 3-5 Knockavilla 2-4 The next game for this team is an away game to Holy Cross on Saturday next.

Meanwhile our U10 and our U8 teams will be playing next Sunday as part of the GAA fun day which is being held in the main GAA pitch (opposite the Church). This should be a great days entertainment for all the family and we would ask all the U10 and 8 players to be in the pitch at 1.30pm.

NEW EXHIBITION
The Craft Granary is pleased to present an exhibition of watercolours by Wexford-based artist Anne McLeod.  She exhibits both locally and nationally and has won a number of awards for her work, as well as being elected to the Watercolour Society of Ireland in 2000.

Anne paints primarily flowers, landscapes and domestic and farm animals. Her work invited viewers literally to ‘see the light’. Using richer colours than many watercolourists, her paintings draw vitalit6y from the powerful play of light and shade.

This new exhibition runs until 26th September, opening times being:  Monday to Friday 10:30am to 6pm and 9am to 5pm on Saturdays.
