CAHIR NOTES
GAA FIELD DAY
What a super day it was! In fact, I don’t think I have seen one better. There was masses for everyone to do, and to top it all off, the lovely teas that I always look forward to. The awning and seating for the teas looks most impressive, and the table settings are top notch – you don’t often see matching delft at this sort of event!
The Dog Show, judged by Alison Messenger, did not have a huge entry but was great fun and gave people something else to watch. Some of the smaller dogs were almost lost in the grass, and only progressed by jumping over tussocks, but everyone took this in good part and I have been promised a short back and sides for that section when there is next a dog show. The full results will be published next week. However, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Breeda Ryan very much for the lovely Rosettes that she made – and she always includes some ‘Specials’, which are usually needed. Breeda really is most generous to the local shows, which adds great value to the fundraising.
CAHIR COUNTRY MARKET
Having actually made it to the Country Market last week, it was great to see new faces selling new products – and all of them lovely. As well as the home-made goodies that are always available (if one arrives early enough!) and flowers and plants, Francesca has added a very nice classical Tapenade; Red Pepper Hummous; and Prawn Tapenade to her regular line of beautiful hand-made greeting cards that can be pre-ordered and personalized for customers.
On the next stall I found not just Honey, but Beeswax Polish and Beeswax Candles (that smell so great) in different attractive shapes. One of them even sported a tiny beeswax bee. And there were honey-dippers too (I am not sure what they are really called, but that’s what my family says),
Further along there were beautiful floral arrangements by Christine Wort. Christine will be starting Flower Arrangement Classes again, in the Catherine McAuley Room, for six weeks starting on Thursday 27th SAeptember at 7:30pm. Please phone her on 052 65826 or 086 223 7139 for more information.
The Country Market takes place every Friday morning at 9:30am in the Community Hall, and the early birds are the only ones who will have the full choice of comestibles.
Congratulations to the members on their second place in the All Ireland competition. I hope to be able to put some photos from this event up on the Community Website: www.cahirnews.cahirda.com. And these prize-winning people supply their goods to the Market every week – lucky Cahir.
WHATS ON AT DUNESKE?
Rugby Fever has hit Duneske, so for all the boys and girls aged 6 to 12 years, get on those jerseys and go along on Saturday 22nd September from 12 noon to 3pm.
Back by popular demand on September 29th is “So You Think You Can Dance?” 5 – 8-year-olds go along from 11am to 12:30pm and 9 to 12-year-olds at 12:34 to 2:15pm. This has been and will continue to be great fun thanks to the Dance Instructor Sarah.
This is a big one for the diary – Soccer Street League runs over two weekends: October 6th and 7th and 13th and 14th. Girls and boys between the ages of 8 and 12 years represent their area in a 7-a-side Soccer League. Application forms can be collected at Duneske. All weekend activities must be signed up for. For further details, contact them on 052 45517.
September is known as Healthy Aging Month, promoting the fact that exercise is a proven way to prevent, delay and help to treat many diseases and conditions that affect individuals as they age, such as arthritis, Alzheimer’s, osteoporosis, cancer and heart disease, to name a few. The moral of the story is that Seniors need to make regular physical activity, including cardiovascular exercise and strength and flexibility training, a part of their everyday lives. Let Duneske help you to take that first step and ring to book your assessment. One of their Instructors will assist you all the way to a fitter and healthier new you.
CAHIR DEVELOPMENT COMMUNITY LOTTO
The Jackpot total has reached €2,950 for the Draw this week. Remember, if you’re not in you can’t win, and you can buy tickets up to the last minute, which is noon on Wednesday, from the Business & Training Centre.
Joan Loughman witnessed the Draw last week, when numbers 1, 6, 14 and 19 came up. The five Lucky Dep winners, each of whom received €30, were: Pat Cashman, Clonmore South; Michael Farrell, c/o Tom O’Donnell; Ian Walsh, Moneraha; May Lonergan, Cahir Park; Paddy Kirby, Mountain Road – all in Cahir.
All the profits from the Community Lotto go to the Duneske Leisure Complex.
CAHIR / SCARBOROUGH TRUST
The following is from Cllr Andy Moloney, Chairman of Cahir Development Association.
“The recent visit by a group from Scarborough has reminded those involved at this end that a sum of money is available should a Committee be set up on this side of the water to offer some children from the Cahir Area the chance to go to Scarborough for a week’s holiday.
“These children’s family background would have to be such that they would not normally have the chance of a holiday. This is the case with the Scarborough/Cahir Trust that organized such a break for some 22 children and 8 helpers in Cahir each year from the Yorkshire town. This is, in many cases, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
“The people of the Cahir area are always good at raising money for causes like this and sponsoring Maria Shine to work at the Special Olympics is testament to that.
“The Trust will need a Working Committee to meet with the Twinning Committee and take the idea forward. Anyone that might like to get involved should call to the Cahir Development AGM on Monday17th September or express their interest at the Enterprise Centre, leaving a name and phone number. This could be extended to the Cahir Electoral Area if needs be. As I have said, there is a Fund with a substantial sum in it already.”
It is good to see this idea, first mooted some years ago, being taken up vigorously.
CAHIR CHORAL
We were back at practice last Friday, working on the repertoire for the concert to take place next April. This will celebrate Maureen Ahern’s 25 years as Musical Director. I have a nasty feeling that she may wish to retire thereafter, so lets make it a really good one, and she may continue?!
So – 8pm at New Haven. New members are very welcome, and if you want to talk to Maureen about the group, ring 052 41508.
SAY CHEESE!
Local cheeses will be available from this Saturday at Cahir Farmers’ Market. TJ Crowe, he of the lovely pork and bacon products, will be stocking these too. He will be concentrating on the sale of local cheeses to begin with, including Cashel Blue, Crozier Blue, Ardrahan and Cratloe Hills Cheeses. These will be a great addition to the bacon, rashers, homemade sausages – original recipe and flavoured – and various cuts of pork.
This will also be the third week that Cate has olives, sun dried tomatoes, focaccia and yueast bread.
All these new additions are to meet customers’ demands, so that there is plenty of variety on offer. Customer feed-back is vital to the success of the Market. Some seating areas have been added, too, where visitors can relax and take in the atmosphere and enjoy yourself as you much your way through some of your purchases: fruit, juice, cake, cookies or a bun.
COLAISTE DUN IASCAIGH NEWS!
The College re-opened last week following the Summer break and a warm welcome is extended to the newest members of the school community, the First Year pupils and the new PLC students. It is hoped that the year ahead will be stimulating and rewarding for them and that they find the school environment friendly and supportive.
Congratulations are extended to the Sixth Year students of last year on their Leaving Certificate success. New members of staff are welcomed: Geraldine Flynn; Sarah O’Leary; Stephen Morgan; Gerald Kelleher; Carmel Frewen; Kathleen O’Callaghan; Jane O’Dwyer; Donna Grant; Susan Dunne; Marika O’Connor; Jennifer Keating and Jenna Doyle. It is hoped that they will enjoy their time there.
Congratulations to staff members Fiona Green, Crystal Bell, Martina Harrahill, Sandra Fitzgerald, Norma Barry-Hurley and Sheila O’Grady, on their “new additions”.
As the new term begins, it is important that all students, particularly those in examination classes, “hit the ground running”, where study and examination preparation are concerned.
Everyone looks forward to a productive and enjoyable year, both inside and outside the classroom.
THANKS
On behalf of Marie O’Brien I would like to thank everyone who contributed to the Bag Pack in SuperValu in aid of Aids Orphaned Kids in Kenya. She would also like to thank John and Carmel for letting them pack there. And of course, also all those w3ho helped and to the staff who demonstrated how to pack property. The fine total raised was €1,900.
HOSPICE COFFEE MORNING
The Coffee Morning at the Lazy Bean in aid of South Tipperary Hospice has become an annual event, and will take place this year on Wednesday 20th September from 9am until noon… There will be free coffee and goodies, as well as a Raffle, and Donations will be accepted gladly.

The Group resumed last Thursday morning, and this continues every Thursday at 10:30 to 12:30 – all are welcome.
GREAT WEBSITE
I have just been introduced to a wonderful site, showing wildlife photographs that are used by National Geographic, among others: www.paulnicklen.com. Animal lovers, do have a look.
SUCCESS AT A.I.M.S.
Congratulations to the group from the Colaiste who competed in this singing festival, representing their school distinction, and particularly to Grainne O’Donnell, who won the Girls’ (16 and over) ~Solo Singing. She sang ‘Lovely, Lonely Man and Dove’se (Can you Hear Me?)
The group also consisted of Kate O’Donovan, Rhiona Burke, Nora Peters, Cieran Wooten and Alan Hally and they wish to express their thanks to their teacher, Ms Sarah O’Leary and the accompanist, Patrick Conlon.

CAHIR MEALS ON WHEELS
Everyone connected to this hard-working group is most grateful to all who donated to, and assisted with, their Annual Collection. They still need more volunteers to help in the preparation and delivery of meals.
NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH
South Tipperary Fianna Fail TD mattie McGrath today welcomed the re-launch of the Neighborhood Watch Programme for Urban Areas by the Deputy Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan. Deputy McGrath is very pleased with this development, which shows the dedication of the Gardai to the community. He calls on all communities who were involved in Neighborhood Watch previously, to re-activate their groups.
Part of the new strategy has seen the appointment of District Sergeants with responsibility for Neighborhood Watch in each Garda District. Any person seeking information either on re-activating or launching new schemes should now make contact with the District Sergeant in his or her Garda District… Deputy McGrarth is also looking forward to the imminent re-launch of the Muintir na Tire / An Garda Siochana programme for Community Alert. This is the rural equivalent of Neighborhood Watch.
The Deputy further states that the communities should endeavour to assist An Garda Siochana in their task, because without the support of the community, the Gardai cannot succeed in the battle against vandalism and other types of anti-social behaviour.
TUESDAY NIGHT BRIDGE
This Club resumes after the Summer break, on Tuesday 25th September at 7:30pm. New members are cordially invited to join. Those who have attended classes over the past couple of years would be especially welcomed. Now is the time to put into practice all you have learned in class. Don’t miss this opportunity to enjoy a most pleasant night out over the Winter months.
OUTSTANDING NEWS
I am afraid another week has to go by without the results of the Funday Dog Show, but these will appear as soon as possible. However, I would like to thank Mossy Casey, who generously sponsored the Class Cups and some of the medals for the children’s races, too. This meant that there was a tidy little sum to add to the takings for Maria Shine and Special Olympics Ireland. And Breed Ryan’s beautiful Rosettes were much admired – and coveted. She also made lovely bookmarks which every exhibitor received, as well as all those who helped on the day.
