CURBING STREET DRINKING IN CAHIR
A proposal in front of the council for Bye-Laws on the consumption of Intoxicating Liqueor in Public Places in Cahir has been welcomed by Cllr AndyMoloney.Under Part 19 of the Local Government Act 2001 the council is empowered to make Bye-Laws to regulate activities or other matters where in its opinion it is desirable to do so in the interest of the common good of the local community. Cllr Moloney says that in consultation with the other Cahir Area members and the Garda Superintendent it is necessary to introduce such a law to curb the drinking of intoxicating liquor and the growing trend that seems to be developing in certain public areas of Cahir. He states what might appear as normal practice and part of a culture in other areas around the world, the sight of some members of society hanging around some local leisure spots and walkways may mean no harm,it is seen to be intimidating to the elderly especially and unsightly to the many Tourists who Cahir depends on largly. The law also protects the publican who might use the immediate vicinity of their premises for trade purposes. Cllr Moloney is hopeful that this bye-law will be unopposed at Mondays Meeting and that the unsightly practice of public places drinking will be a thing of the past.
