CAHIR NOTES
CAHIR FARMERS’ MARKET
A great day was had at the Hallowe’en Market on 27th October. RTE’s Clodagh McKenna visited to record her programme and was very impressed with all she saw: the choice of goods in particular, as well as the ambience. She interviewed some of the stallholders: Con Traas of The Apple Farm, Marie Mulcahy of Knockara Pate, and Pat O’Brien of O’Brien’s Farm Shop.
Clodagh also judged the Apple Tart Competition, which was won by Martina Doverman of Cahir.
Jim Trehy, the Chairman of the Stallholders, was very happy with the outcome of the day and everyone is looking forward to seeing the series in the New Year.
Every weekend from now until Christmas, the Market will continue to supply fresh ingredients, fish, meat, organic meat and chicken, apples, juices, bread, cakes and cheeses, to name but a few.

NEW EXHIBITION AT CRAFT GRANARY
The Nire Craft Group is delighted to present an Exhibition of its members; work at the Craft Granary from Friday 9th until Thursday 29th November.
Nicholas Mosse has kindly agreed to preside over the opening. The Mosse family has maintained a keen and supportive interest in Irish crafts for many years.
The Group consists of eleven local women from varying backgrounds who meet, weekly, to make patchwork quilts. They range from complete novices to experienced quilters. There is an age difference between their members of over half a century.
The Group has been in existence for five years and has had exhibitions over the Eastert week-end 2004 and 2006. They made a group quilt on both of these occasions, which were subsequently raffled in aid of charity.
Last year they were delighted and very proud to be chosen, against stiff competition, for a Grant from the Community Forum, under the Social Inclusion umbrella for Art and Craft. Patchwork is a craft that encourages group participation, often necessary when laying or quilting; enjoyable and useful when making design decisions. They are interested in developing the recycling and sustainable aspects of the tradition.
The Nire Craft Group always welcomes new members, or anyone with creative skills that they would like to share. Everyone benefits from the wonderful space available in the, the friendly atmosphere, cups of tea and the lovely open fire. Enquiries to the Secretary on 086 828 8998.
Almost all the work on show at the Exhibition is for sale and entirely hand-made in Ireland. Commissions are welcomed, too. Why not organise an outing, perhaps find a nice Christmas present in the shop, visit the Castle, and have a bit in one of the excellent local eateries?

There were many tired people with heavy heads wandering around on the Monday morning after all the excitement.

As there was no Jackpot winner last week, the five Lucky Dip winners each received €30: Michael & Joan Kelly, Knlckgraffon; Brendan Burke, Galtee View; Fr Matthew Knight, Rockwell College; Kathleen Hanley, Woodview; Ann Quinn, Knockagh.
The numbers drawn, supervised by Joan Loughman, were 13, 14, 16 and 25. The next draw takes place this Wednesday, and tickets can be purchased up to the last minute (noon) on the day. The Jackpot stands at €4,150 for this week.
All the profits from the Community Lotto go to the Duneske Leisure Complex.
NIGHT FOR THE LIONS TO ROAR!
Don’t forget that this Thursday is the night of the Cahir Lions Club’s annual Fashion Show, which will be bigger and better than every, with new exhibitors, some new models and loads of stands as well.
Cahir Lions does a great deal with the money they raise: they pay for the Summer Holiday in Carne for the elderly, providing any support needed; and make donations to local charities, as well as fundraising for Children at Risk in Ireland (CARI).
As well as the exhibitors listed on the posters, and the two mentioned last week, I was interested to hear that Sarah’s Flowers will be on display too. In fact, it’s a real community effort and everyone should be proud.
So if you haven’t got your ticket (only €25) already, you may find that some exhibitors still have a few, or you can get them at the Cahir House Hotel (where I had a very enjoyable lunch last week, and an excellent cup of coffee).
RUMOURS UNFOUNDED
It was good to hear that the rumours that Jason was giving up Irwin’s are unfounded, he assures me. Now I am awaiting with interest the opening of the Wine Bar upstairs at the River House. He’s a busy guy.
EUROSTAR
The first round of the Eurostar Competition took place last Saturday in The Hill Inn. The whole night was a resounding success, with a mixture of very entertaining competitions and fantastic singers making for a night that will be remembered.
Everyone had a great time and is looking forward to the Second Round on Saturday 10th, starting at approximately 9:30pm. The following went through: 1. Owen Casey; 2. David Byron; 3. Marcus McGee; 4. Paul Sutherland; 5. Patrick Caplice; 6. Nicky Byrne. The Most Entertaining Act was Dympna Hally and Aiden Burke.
The Carrolls would like to thank all their sponsors for the wonderful spot prizes they donated, and anyone that would like to donate anything can just drop it in to the Hill Inn. Please go along on Saturday and enjoy the fun. All the proceeds are for Cahir Meals on Wheels.
