CAHIR NOTES

MARKET CHRISTMAS SPECIAL WITH SANTA
The Annual Special at Cahir Farmers’ Market will take place this coming Saturday, in the Granary car park, from 9am to 1pm.  The Stallholders wish to say a big “thank you!” to their customers for their support throughout the past year.

Therefore, during the morning, a number of events will be run:  there will be tastings from the stalls; Christmas Carols from the Cahir Choral Society; Face Painting for children (and for older children too) with Tina Looby; and a Children’s Colouring Competition. And of course Santa will be there.

He is very busy, as always at this time of year, but he will visit Cahir Farmers’ Market around 10:30am, because he wants to meet the children to check up on some of their requests. Since the reindeer will be resting up before their journey around the world at Christmas, Santa will be chauffeur driven by Michael Lavin in one of the motorcars from his Clonmel Vintage Car Museum in Powerstown.

The Market Committee also wish to thank their customers for their perseverance during the windy conditions experienced during last Saturday’s Market. After one canopy took off, the organizers, having assessed the situation, decided to take down all canopies. Many thanks are due to the customers for helping out in their removal. Some stalls closed up completely, but those remaining were able to withstand the gusts that persisted throughout the morning, so the organizers allowed the Market to continue until closing time.

INVITATION FROM THE CRAFT GRANARY
To make the Christmas Farmers’ Market even more special, The Craft Granary would like to invite you to join them for a free tea / coffee / chocolate tasting on Saturday from 9:30am to 1pm.

CAHIR DIVE CLUB
While the weather at sea is rough, full advantage is being taken of being stranded on (fairly) dry land. Eight members of the Club are doing a Chartwork and Position Fixing Course under the instruction of Diarmuid.

Over a number of evenings they will be shown how to use sea charts to plan routes, how to understand the ‘rules of the road’ at sea and those of the group who have not done so already will go on to do the Boat Course in the New Year.

Two of these eight members, Garreth and Maurice, have also started their Theory Lectures for the Dive Leader Course. There is no stopping them now!

Thinking about taking up a new hobby in the New Year? Want to experience breathing under water? Their ‘Try-a-Dive’ night is being arranged in the New Year, date to be announced.

CAHIR OUTREACH GROUP
The Cahir Outreach Group for the Chernobyl Children’s Project International wishes to thank everyone who so generously supported their Annual Shopping Trolley Raffle last weekend. Special thanks go to John and Carmel, SuperValu and Bernie O’Brien, Spar, for having the Raffle in their shops.

The winner of the Shopping Trolley at SuperValu was Maggie Magner, Tipperary Road, and the winner at Spar was Mary Sheehan, The Square, Cahir. Thanks to everyone who supported the event.

PEOPLE OF CAHIR DESERVE ANSWERS
Deputy Hayes calls on the developers of the proposed power plant at Kilcommon, Cahir to answer the questions and concerns of the people of Cahir. The power plant is worrying locals, who want to know more about the consequences of the plant on the environment, the water and power supply, and the position of the town as a tourist site and historic attraction.

Locals fear that this will impact negatively on water and power supply;  cause excessive congestion with trucks, as well as bringing additional noise and acid rain to the area. The effects that people are worried about are broad and impact on quality of life. Chairman of the Fine Gael Park, Tom Hayes, calls on the developer to be more up-front with the people of Cahir, give them the information required, and allow them to feel that they know what is involved in the proposed plant.

A meeting on the plant was held last week, where many expressed their concerns and all are hopeful that more information will be forthcoming.

For further information, please contact 087 810 5016.

CAHIR DAY CARE CENTRE
The annual Christmas Party in Cahir House Hotel was a great success. Thanks are expressed to all the people who gave of their time, the sponsors of the wonderful spot prizes and the musicians, for the excellent selection of dance music.

The Jackpot for the Bingo has not been won and will be €75 this week – a nice one to win before Christmas.

LANDSCAPING PLAN WELCOMED
Cllr Andy Moloney has welcomed what he calls “an exciting time for Cahir Town” and its supporters. He is referring to the new contract that has been struck between the Cahir Area Office of South Tipperary County Council and Grangemore Landscapes, in association with Cahir Development, of which he is currently Chairman.

The Plan will be revealed this Wednesday, 12th December, when the Launch will take place in Cahir House Hotel at 7pm, at which all interested parties will be most welcome.

While Chairman Cllr Moloney would like to compliment and thank the voluntary bodies who have kept the Tidy Towns alive over the years, he states that they are not redundant, but merely getting a well deserved hand from the Council and Grangemore Plants.

The Launch of the Plan will be followed by a presentation and discussion on how the people of Cahir can get involved in implementing the Cahir Town Landscaping Plan. While most areas of the town will be included in this 5-year deal, he says that it is up to us to get involved and to get our Town up to standard in its first year, so that we can be proud of it and by the end of the term of this Contract we can be competing for some of the top honours in the County.

CAHIR DEVELOPMENT COMMUNITY LOTTO
The Jackpot stands at nearly €5,000 – exactly €4,900 to be precise. What a nice Christmas present that would be! Tickets can be bought up to noon this Wednesday from the Business & Training Centre.

SOUTH TIPPERARY OUTISM SUPPORT GROUP
The Group wishes to thank most sincerely the staff, especially Aoife, and the pupils of Colaiste Dun Iascaigh in Cahir, who sold badges on their behalf. They gave their time and energy so generously to those less fortunate than themselves, in inclement weather. The amount collected in Cahir over the two days was €931.30, which was fantastic and of great financial support to the Group.

Sincere thanks to Bernard of Spar Supermarket Cahir, Henry, Postmaster of Cahir Post Office and Finbar of Dolan’s SuperValu Cahir, who kindly allowed the pupils access to their premises.

“Autism is a developmental disorder that occurs in early one in every 100 children – mainly boys. It affects all aspects of a child’s life:  communication, language and behaviour being the main ones.  Some children are non-verbal – unable to speak. Our Group is trying to give these children a voice in our society.

“We are a voluntary group and are parent-led. We have bi-monthly meetings where parents, carers, sisters/brothers can broaden their knowledge and come together to share their experiences and thereby gain a better understanding of the condition.

“we are to be found in Room 4, Clonmel Resource Centre, Kickham Street, Clonmel. The telephone number is 052 29529. Joan, in our office, is available from 9:30am to 12:30 from Monday to Friday, to answer any queries.

“Please, if your child has recently been diagnosed with Autism, PDD / Asperger’s Syndrome, or if you have recently moved to the area, don’t feel alone. We are there to support and help you. In our office, we have a wide range of information covering diet, therapies, treatments, entitlements and sensory education. We also have a Library. COLAISTE DUN IASCAIGH NEWS

TRIP TO BOLTON v MANCHESTER UTD.

Colaiste students accompanied by Mr. Corcoran and Mr. Berry went to the
Bolton v Manchester Utd premiership match on 23rd November.
The Match was held at the Reebok Stadium in Bolton.  There was a wonderful atmosphere at
the game with a very good outcome for ABU's. The group enjoyed an evenings bowling at Didsbury. On the return journey home students had the opportunity to get in some Christmas Shopping at Cheshire Oaks.

SOCCER
U.16 soccer team got a bye and are now due to meet De La Salle, Waterford

CAHIR ACTIVE RETIREMENT ASSOCIATION
On Wednesday 5th December members gather to enjoy their Annual Christmas Lunch at Cahir House Hotel. The meal and the service were excellent, and much appreciated by everyone present. After the meal, members relaxed and enjoyed the music and dancing and, once more, they all went away in high spirits, ready for the next outing.

I took a good few photos of the event, and I HOPE they will appear in the issue of 27th December.

During the afternoon, I was given what I think is a great idea:  to collect recipes for different ways to cook potatoes, before they are all lost in the mists of time. Apparently a “good wife” would know at least 21 recipes, for three meals a day, seven days a week, without repetition. Please send any offerings to me, and if there are enough, perhaps we could publish them.

Results of the cards for Friday 7th December: 1st – with 12 games, Dave White, Willie O’Neil; 2nd – with 11 games, Margaret Quirk and Nora Lee. The Lucky Table (19) was won by Peg Reidy, Kitty Slattery (20) Rena O’Connor, Breeda Ryan. The Raffle was won by Bridget Condon and Margaret Quinlan.

CAHIR  CHORAL IN B.T.
Members and friends of the Society made the trip to Limerick once more, last Saturday, to sing in Brown Thomas’ and raise funds for St V de P. Our repertoire takes about an hour to sing, and I think listeners enjoyed it as much as we did. To date I haven’t got the total amount of money raised, but it looked good – lots of paper in the boxes. We very much enjoy having some members of the Folk Choir singing with us – long may it last!
