CAHIR NOTES
RESURFACING WELCOMED
Cllr Andy Moloney has welcomed the news that South Tipp County Council and Cahir Development have combined to have the Market Yard resurfaced with paving stones, and the area equipped with street lighting.
He says that this area, leading into the Doctors’ Surgery Car Park and the Enterprise Centre, has become a very busy part of the town and its resurfacing is well overdue.
Cllr Moloney also states that the erection of some street lights in Church Street is welcome. He says that, due to the vandalism to the lanterns at The Mall, it is proving difficult to convince the ESB that they should be repaired and replaced again.
Andy also says that the benefits of the Landscaping Plan that was an initiative between Cahir Development, South Tipp County Council and Grangemore Landscaping (Niall Grogan) are starting to show. People should be encouraged to join the Tidy Town Committee or offer to keep their own area tidy. Contact details can be had from the Enterprise Centre on 052 42616.
GREAT WORK DONE
Along the same lines as Andy Moloney’s comments, is a piece that Maria Taylor has written for these Notes, for which many thanks. She is my eyes and ears on her side of Cahir.
“It was really nice to get back from a short break away, to see such a lot of change had taken place all along the road from SuperValu to Abbey Crescent. Firstly, two beds have been created in front of Abbey Crescent and some lovely structural plants put in, making a very pretty entrance feature. Gone is the Dogwood which had obscured the entrance to Avondale Court for a few years.
“What has been left are the lovely trees that were planted some time back and are now very well established and once again, create a lovely entrance to the estate.
“Although the footpath from Woodview right down to the Mountain Rd has been completed, the verge and flower beds at the entrance to Woodview have not. (Hopefully this will be remedied soon).
“The opposite side is almost complete, with only the finishing of two much-needec rossings to go. Two beautiful flower beds have been put in at the end of the Mountain Road, one in front of ‘Snip n Clip’ and one in front of Cahir Care. Both have been filled with Box hedging and colourful Primulas.
“All along Abbey Street tubs, also filled with Box and Primulas have been dotted all about, making all the shops and premises cheerier.
“More change has taken place in the form of new premises. Ladrigan’s (now Londis) has had a paint job and is looking very smart. There is a new shop called ‘Computer Solutions 4U’, which also has an internet Café. The renovations to Pat Beary’s premises are almost complete and it looks fantastic - and all in keeping with the other established buildings in the street. Lastly Harrington’s Bookmakers have opened where Sugar n Spice used to be.
“Finally, it has to be said, we may be nearing a time when we will not have to deal with the dreaded temporary traffic lights which have plagued us since early last September.
“As I have already said, what a transformation! The whole area looks new, refreshed and clean and ready for business. Well done to Grangemore Landscaping, the County Council and Cahir Development on the excellent Landscaping plant. Also to all of the workers who have done such an amazing job. Keep up the good work.”

COMMEMORATION OF EASTER RISI NG
The following is included as I think it may be of interest to many.
On Easter Sunday it is a well established tradition that people gather at the grave of a fallen patriot to pay their tribute of respect. In South Tipperary the annual Commemoration is at the grave of George Plant in St Johnstown Churchyard on the Killenaule Road, about 5 miles out of Fethard.
There is a parade to the grave, headed by a band. The 1016 Proclamation (Fior-bhunreacht Poblachta na h-Eireann) is read, the Easter Message is proclaimed and a brief address is delivered.
George Plant, A General officer in the IRA, was killed by order of a drum-head Court Martial convened by Colonel “Hanger” Joyce. Plant had earlier been discharged by the civilian Courts.
Plant, always as good as his word, never swerved from that perilous furrow he had opened in the fight for freedom.
The Parade assembles at St Johnstown at 2:45pm; Ceremonies commence at 3pm. The Speaker will be Cllr Liam Walsh, Deputy Mayor of Carrick-on-Suir.
Beidh Failte Roimh Cach agus sean Tiobraod Arainn abu! George Plant, the Pride of Tipperary.
