CAHIR NOTES

IMPORTANT FUNDRAISER
The Cashel Autism Support Group’s fundraising Fashion Show taking place this Wednesday (publication day) has strong Cahir connections, and is to be seen in O’Keefe’s, in Clonmel.

The main Cahir link is the Chairperson of the Group, who is Mary Condon, and Maura Kerins is organising the show.  There will be four of my models there, all from Cahir, as well as several other well known local models. They are being dressed by Nest and Ryan’s Design in some lovely outfits.

It was an education to visit Nest with two of ‘Maureen’s Models’, as I had always seen it as a young people’s shop. However, upstairs there were some lovely outfits for more mature women.

Right next door is Ryan’s Design, and I would say the two places complement each other, supplying a different look for different people. I have no doubt that the audience will be treated to a wide range of styles for the Spring - if it ever comes!

There will be tickets available at the door, at €10. so do come along for an entertaining evening, with loads of raffle prizes and Teresa O’Callaghan’s amazing hat, that is being auctioned. It is for a VERY good cause, as described in last week’s paper.

WELCOME BACK
…to all who visited Scarborough. I am hoping someone will put pen to paper so that the rest of us can read all about it. Mike Manning sent me the Scarborough Evening News of 1st April, with a lovely picture of Dougie Stubbs enjoying his 90th birthday surprise - a party with all his friends from Cahir present too. At least almost all - I was missing, unfortunately.

How everyone managed to keep the party a surprise from Dougie I can’t imagine. Of course, the celebrations took place in The Spa pub, which now belongs to Mike Manning. This is the place with the “Cahir Corner”, full of photographs. Nellie Williams was someone making her first visit to Scarborough, so perhaps I will be able to pin her down and relay her comments to you. Sounds painful, but you know what I mean.

CASHEL AMNESTY GROUP
This Group will meet next Monday night, 14th April, in Mikey Ryan’s pub in Cashel at 8:30pm. Members with any outstanding money raised through the sale of Friendship Bracelets, please take it along on the night.

Anyone who is interested in Amnesty International and human rights is very welcome.

THE SPICE GARDEN
This Indian Restaurant and Takeaway opened recently opposite SuperValu, and I have had excellent reports of it, from diners and from people who have ordered takeaways. Welcome to Cahir!

WRAP & PACK
The recent Wrap & Pack for the South Tipperary Hospice, that was held at Supervalu - for which many thanks to Carmel and John Dolan - was a huge success, with over €2,000 being raise, and still counting.

The 1st and 2nd Year students from the Colaiste were terrific, and I have been asked to pass on the thanks of the organisers to them.

CUSTOMER NOTICE!
Cahir Library has been open on Thursday afternoons from 2 to 5pm, beginning on Thursday 3rd April.

An online cataloue is available for searching, book renewal and book requests: www.tipperarylibraries.ie.

CAMOGIE CLUB
It’s all systems go - now that the long evenings have arrived, all the teams are back outdoors, training each Wednesday evening at Duneske from 7 to 8pm. It is very encouraging to see such a bunch of enthusiastic young ladies from u-8 all the way up to the Junior team out enjoying the fresh air and getting loads of exercise.

The Junior team will be in action in Duneske on Sunday 13th April against Clonoulty, with a thro-in time of 12 noon. Many of the ladies involved in the Camogie Club will take a trip to Thurles on Thursday night, 10th April, to support the County Board’s Fashion Extravaganza in aid of the upgrading of the County pitch at the Ragg.

Best wishes are sent to all the girls from the Club who received the Sacrament of Confirmation last Sunday. We hope you all really enjoyed your day.

Just another reminder to all that membership fees are now due and can be given to Club Treasurer Jo Burke as soon as possible.

GOOD NEWS!
Liam Roche sent me the following, which had the intended affect and cheered me up.

“Having looked at your notes last week, it looks like you need some good news. Some weeks ago, I was asked by an American friend to put some historical notes together for his website (he was involved in a St Patrick’s Day Parade in California). To complete this task I looked up all the usual reference books and some old notes of my own.

“Around St Patrick’s weekend I decided to visit a few historical sites and take a few fresh photographs to accompany these notes. Two sites just north of Cahir were of great interest to me. The first, Killandriffe (Kill ard Righ) or the Church of the High King, is said to have been named after a high King (Ard Righ) of Ireland who met his death while bathing in the nearby River Suir. Legend indicates that this spot is his burial place.

“Another great leader was buried in this churchyard in 1910 when General Sir William Butler KCB was laid to rest beside his forefathers.

“Well, the site was as expected, in great condition as always, clean gravel path, cut grass, a credit to the local community.

“The second site I visited was Toureen Pekaun, not far from Killandriffe. This site is just tucked in under the Galtee Mountains. On the first of August the Pattern of Pekaun is still held and for some it is still a place of pilgrimage.  The well is under an old thorn tree and a little distance to the East are the remains of a stone circle “the Saint’s Cell”.

“The little 12th century Church is just across the stream about 50 metres away. In the Church site are memorial slabs and carved crosses. Pekaun is a corruption of Becan, an Irish Saint of the 6th century.

“This site was always a credit to the land owners and people of the area. In these days of the Celtic Tiger it is great to see people who are indeed trusty custodians of our heritage. The site is in a state of perfect preservation. The stream is clean and the banks lined with daffodils. Even suitable signage to help visitors, yet there is no intrusion in the natural environment. I only hope we can have Old St Mary’s in Old Church Street in Cahir cleaned and restored in this way.” [And so say many of us!]

CAHIR DEVELOPMENT COMMUNITY LOTTO
The Jackpot has now topped three grand, with the total for this week standing at €3,100. Tickets can be bought up to noon on Wednesday from the Enterprise Centre.

Last week the draw was witnessed by Peter Fahy and produced numbers 15, 17, 18 and 21. The five Lucky Dip winners, each of whom received €30, were:  Catherine Murphy, Abbey Street; Eimear O’Malley, Woodlands; Andrew O’Donnell, Knockagh; Teresa Lonergan, Abbey Terrace and Tom Hubbard, Mountain Road, all in Cahir.

All the profits from the Community Lotto go to the Duneske Leisure Complex.

NEW LAUNDRY SERVICE
Isn’t it great that there is a new Laundry Service in Cahir? So useful, not only for B&B owners and restaurants, but also for everyone who wants to be saved the ironing! You will find this great place right next to what everyone still calls ‘Kendrick’s’ - the Abbey Tavern. I am sure the owners will be made most welcome.

LONERGAN SAYS THANKS
Cllr Seanie Lonergan wishes to pay a sincere thanks to everyone who attended the recent unveiling of a Plaque to commemorate the Famine Children of Tincurry. In what was a very moving ceremony, prayers were offered by Fr……………..Rev Arthur Carter and Rev Barbara Friday for the deceased orphans.

The Plaque was officially unveiled by Dr Michael Ahern. He also gave a brie3f address, as a cold wind swept across the Galtees.

Local historian Ed O’Riordan produced a highly informative booklet on the eevents which took place in mid-19th century Tincurry.

Cllr Lonergan states that both himself and Ed are very proud of the fact that a lasting legacy has been left to the many children who died from starvation and disease. Seanie and Ed say a special thanks to the countless individuals who contributed to the success of the day.

The success of this event clearly demonstrates that the ravages of the Great Famine remain embedded in the Irish mindset. In what today is a beautiful place, it is hard to believe that Tincurry was once a place of great suffering and immense tragedy.

CAHIR YOUTH CLUB
On Saturday 29th March, members travelled to Kilmacthomas for the annual Regional Quiz & Disco, organised by Waterford Regional Youth Group.

Members had a great night, meeting people of their own age in a safe environment, and were a credit to the Club.

Many thanks are expressed to the Leaders who travelled with them, and to Seamus, who provided their transport.

NEW EXHIBITION
The Craft Granary is pleased to announce an exhibition by the VTOS, Cahir. The exhibition will feature the work the students have produced during the year and will include drawings, mixed media pieces and 33-D and Two Dimensional work which has been made for the Community Art and Sculpture Train in Cahir with Philip Quinn.

The dates for the exhibition are 14th to 30th April.

MEDJUGORJE PILGRIMAGE
The Pilgrimage to Medjugorge departs from Cork Airport on 31st May. The cost is €624 p.p.s. for 7 nights. A deposit of €80 is required to reserve a seat. The local contact is Margaret McGrath, who can be contacted on 086 852 5109 or 052 36825.

CAHIR DAY CARE CENTRE
The Cappawhite Community Centre is the venue for the ‘Go for Life Programme’ during the month of April. The aim of the Go for Life Programme is to involve a greater number of older adults in physical activity. The South Tipperary Sports Partnership is a group of agencies, community and sporting representatives funded by the Irish Sports Council, under the Local Sports Parnership initiative.

Two delegates from the Cahir Day Care Centre are attending the workshops and will be passing on the programme of activities to members in the near future.

MATCH ATTAX TRADING
Last Saturday evening, Children from Cahir, Grange, Balylooby, Rosegreen and the surrounding areas came together to trade their cards at Cahir House Hotel.

After a somewhat shy start from some children, trading was soon under way with children from different areas. They had a great time, with some staying the full 2 ½ hours.

The parents were fascinated, as was the organiser, Chris Richards, watcing them interact. No shouting or arguing, just the business of trading was the order of the day. Due to School restrictions, Chris’s own son in unable to trade with other children (they live outside of Cahir) and was thrilled to be able to meet other children with whom to trade.

There was a draw for a football, with a parent picking out numbers 126 - 130. This was one of the three Tobin brothers, so enjoy the kick-around, lads.

Chris Richards will be organising another day for children to trade. Parents and children alike seemed to enjoy themselves. Watch these notes next week for confirmation of the time, date and place.

CAHIR ACTIVE RETIREMENT ASSOCIATON
Two delegates from this Association are attending workshops, as above (see Cahir Day Care Centre).

There will be a Sun Holiday to Portugal this September. Rosemary Morrissey from Fogarty Travel will attend the next monthly meeting to answer questions and finalise the travel arrangements.

The results of the Progressive Twenty Fives Game placed on Friday 4th April are as follows: Winners, with 12 games - Bob Condon, Paddy Holleran; Second, with 11 games - Anne Lonergan, Teresa Duggan. The Lucky Table was won by Ted Dillon, Lexie Sheehan, Kieran O’Brien, Red Burke, and the Raffle by Ted Dillon, Rene O’Connor.

The next game takes place this Friday at 8pm, when light refreshments will be served, as usual. All are welcome to enjoy a pleasant evening out.
