RICHIE O’MAHONEY MEMORIAL MOTORBIKE RUN 2008
This run was in aid of Crumlin Children’s Hospital. Patsy Cunningham reports.
Sunday 29th June was one fantastic day in Ardfinnan - a day to remember our friend Richie. When I got up, after a sleepless night, to see rain and damp conditions on the road, my hear sank a bit. But by 8am the sun was starting to shine and the spirits were lifted.

When I got to Ardfinnan, Anne Marie O’Connell was waiting for me at the Village Hall. She had the Burco boilers on already, and the hall doors open. Bikes started to roll in before 10am and by 11 there were 80 bikes lined up plus some classic cars. Teresa Flynn, owner of Bia Blasta, supplied the food, of which there was plenty. Any left over, I am told, got a good home (ha! ha!).

Francis Carrigan and Mick Sullivan were on the video cameras and getting all the footage for our rocking DVD. We also had lots of people using their own video cameras and it would be great to have all their footage to use on our DVD.

Bernie O’Brien of New Age Photography was out bright and early with some of his students and the cameras were clicking, everyone getting the perfect photo. Music was supplied by Anita and Sean Lonergan and Anita’s boyfriend Kyle. These lads are young but they sounded great and a fitting start to the day, as they were great friends with Richie.

The Garda convoy arrived at 11am, Garda Sergeant Brendan Hoare leading them in. What a sight to see - 16 bikes and 2 patrol cars. Everyone in the village gave them a round of applause. It was truly amazing.

11:30 came and time for the group photograph. Bernie had everything under control and knew exactly where he wanted us. Now, it’s not easy to get 128 bikers plus pillion passengers and hundreds of spectators to move quickly, but Bernie managed it. He told the crowd it would be easier to round up the 20 wild geese than the crowd. After the photos and presentations of flowers to the O’Mahoney family and Anne Marie, it was time to leave town.

The Traffic Corps led all the bikes out of the village to an unbelievable round of applause and cheering. This is where I have to say the Garda Bike Division really showed why they are the elite in the biking world, having confidence and skill to manoeuvre their bikes and our 128 bikes and all the other road users in complete safety. Never once in the day did I have to panic about anyone in our group. At the start of the day, I heard a few lads saying “look at how many arda are here - we will have to drive safely ??” Well, they did, and by the end of the day those lads were very impressed with the Garda and also the Garda were very impressed with the way all the bikers handled themselves.

Thanks to the Garda Traffic Corps in all the towns we visited, a massive thank-you to our Garda convoy on the trip, our own Seamus Maher and Pauric Walsh; all the bikers who turned up; all the visitors; the musicians and the band with their new roadie Johnny Lonergan. To the people of Ardfinnan for all the hassle I caused in preparation for the run and special thanks to the O’Mahoney family. I think Richie would be proud of ye and the day we all got together and remembered him and the friends he made over the years. Husband, father, friend and motorcycle legend Richie O’Mahoney, Crumlin Children’s Hospital thanks you too, as we raised over €4,000 for them and some money for South Tipp Hospice too. Thanks also to my family, wife Anne, Shaune, Ciara and Evan for their work behind the scenes and doing camera work on the day.

All in all, a great day,, and one to remember for a long time to come. When the DVD is ready I will arrange a showing of it in the Village Hall. It won’t be for a while but it will be great. We have top man Brendan Kerins putting it together - he comes highly recommended, so it will be top notch. I can’t wait.

[Most of all, congratulations to Patsy on his terrific organisational abilities and the time he puts so willingly into the causes he espouses.]

SHOE-AHOLICS REJOICE!
I am very happy to say that Karen Murphy has decided to continue selling shoes in Interior Concepts after all! There will be a new collection in next month, and I am sure it is because everyone who knows and loves this shop protested so long and so loud about their banishment.

From Karen’s point of view, one can understand that she has nowhere to display her beautiful curtains, and people hardly seem to be aware that she supplies them, in any style your heart desires. However, here’s to August!

CAHIR DEVELOPMENT COMMUNITY LOTTO
The Jackpot now stands at €5,200! The numbers drawn last week, witnessed by Mary Wilkinson, were: 2, 6, 12 and 15, and the five Lucky Dip winners, each of whom have received €30, were: Patricia Keating, Cahir Abbey Upper; Fr M Knight, Rockwell College; Patty Costigan, Clonmel Road; Liam Lonergan c/o Moloney’s, Cahir; Olive Heffernan, Kilcommon.

It is possible to buy tickets up to the last minute, which is noon on Wednesdays, from the Business & Training Centre. The profits from the Community Lotto goes to servicing Community Projects in Cahir.

BUSINESS MEETING
Are you in business in Cahir?
Interested in the promotion and marketing of Cahir and all the businesses in Cahir?

Then, whether you have a Bed & Breakfast, Pub, Restaurant, Hotel or are a Retailer, you should be interested in attending a meeting in the Duneske Leisure Centre next Monday night 21st July at 8pm. On the night, ways of attracting more business to our town will be discussed.

All are very welcome.

MOTORWAY DESIRES
Friday 25th July has been announced as the date for the opening of the next phase of the new motorway, from Cloughbreeda to Kilbehenny. Cllr Andy Moloney welcomes this announcement, but has serious concerns about the delay in payments to farmers whose land had been put under CPO in the process.

Moloney also states that he has concerns about the waste areas of land left behind, which could become home to those transient traders who leave a mess in the countryside, at what is an important time of year in the tourist trade.

He has called on the Liaison Officer to address these issues immediately and not have people worrying about the future of their locality. While Moloney welcomes the opening of the road, which is 10 months ahead of schedule, he desperately wants to see it open with no baggage.

EILLEN BELL’S NEW BOOK
The book Rosegreen Then and Now can be obtained from the Cahir Development Enterprise Centre, Market Yard, Cahir. If you have any queries, please contact Eileen on 052 62270 / 087 611 2041.

STANDING OVATION FOR DRAIOCHT
St Paul’s Community Centre, Clogheen, came alive to this truly amazing show last Thursday night. It most definitely has the ‘Wow Factor’. Everything about this show portrays class and professionalism. Once the doors open, the audience is made to feel welcome with a cup of tea and a scone at the ready and served at your table. There is time to have a chat and admire your surroundings before the show commences.

When the band comes on stage you are transported through Draiocht. The musicians were brilliant, the excitement the dancers created was palpable and the haunting sounds of the singer lingered and echoed through the rafters. Draiocht na Faille Deirge is not to be missed.

There are performances each Tuesday and Thursday, with the doors opening at 8:15 and the show starting at 9pm sharp. Contact 086 224 3323 for enquiries.

Draiocht has been invited to perform for Minister O’Cuiv’s visit to Clogheen this Wednesday, the doors opening at 2pm with the show starting at 2:30pm.

CAHIR DAY CARE CENTRE
The results of the weekly Whist game:  1st - KittySaunders with 62 points; second Tommy Morrissey with 61 points.

Bowling continues at the All Weather Pitch at Cahir Park on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons at 3:20pm, weather permitting. Next week there is a serious bowling competition starting on Tuesday afternoon. Best of luck to the competitors - all the practice should prove beneficial.

Last week, news of a joyous occasion reverberated around the Centre, with news of the engagement between Tommy Morrissey and Eileen Manger. Apparently they met on a trip to Killarney last year. May we all wish you both enthusiastic congratulations? Well done.

Incidentally, the Autumn trip this year will be to Killarney. Early booking is advised, due to the popularity of these breaks.
